ISO 12945 — pilling resistance

How pilling is tested, how it is graded, what buyers typically accept, and which fibre, yarn and finishing choices actually move the grade.

What the standard covers

ISO 12945 determines a fabric's resistance to surface fuzzing and pilling — the small balls of entangled fibre that form in wear and abrasion. It is one of the most commonly specified appearance tests in apparel, and knitted fabric is inherently more vulnerable than woven because the looser loop structure allows fibre ends to migrate to the surface.

A frequently specified condition is 12,000 Martindale revolutions with an acceptance grade of 3–4. Always work from the buyer's written specification, which sets both the cycle count and the pass grade.

What drives pilling resistance

That last point surprises people regularly: a stronger fibre is not a better one for pilling, because pills only disappear when the fibre anchoring them breaks.

What is ISO 12945?

ISO 12945 is the international standard for determining a fabric's resistance to surface fuzzing and pilling. It has several parts covering different apparatus: pilling box, Martindale and random tumble.

How is pilling rated?

On a five-point visual scale against photographic standards. Grade 5 means no change; grade 1 means severe pilling. Most apparel buyers require grade 3 to 4 or better after the specified cycle count.

How long does the Martindale pilling test run?

A commonly specified condition is 12,000 revolutions, taking roughly three and a half hours. The exact cycle count is set by the buyer specification, not by the standard alone.

What causes pilling in knitted fabric?

Short staple fibre, low twist, loose construction, high hairiness in the yarn and abrasion in wear. Knits pill more readily than wovens because the looser loop structure lets fibre ends migrate to the surface.

Is pilling the same as fuzzing?

No. Fuzzing is fibre ends lifting from the surface; pilling is those fibres entangling into balls that stay attached. Fuzzing usually precedes pilling, and some standards report the two separately.

Lab tests sample. Machine inspection does not.

Pilling is assessed on a swatch, long after the roll is made. Structural faults — holes, drop stitches, lycra breaks — do not need to wait for a lab. Knit-I catches those on 100% of production, as they form.
