What AATCC 179 measures

AATCC Test Method 179 measures the skew change in fabric or garments after home laundering. For knitted fabric it is the standard reference for spirality — wales leaning off vertical, which turns into garments that twist on the body.

The defect is commercially expensive because it is invisible at the point of sale and obvious after the first wash, which makes it a returns problem rather than an inspection problem.

What is spirality in knitted fabric?

Spirality, also called torque or skew, is the tendency of wales to lean away from the vertical. It shows up as garments whose side seams twist around the body, usually becoming obvious only after the first domestic wash.

What are the AATCC 179 acceptance thresholds?

Commonly applied thresholds are 5 degrees or less as acceptable, above 5 degrees as conditional, and above 8 degrees as rejected. As with all standards, the binding figure is whatever the buyer specifies.

What causes spirality?

Residual torque in the yarn is the primary cause. Single jersey is inherently prone to it because there is nothing to balance the loop. Unbalanced twist, high machine speed relative to take-down, and inadequate heat setting all make it worse.

How is spirality reduced?

Use twist-balanced or plied yarn, apply appropriate heat setting or compacting, control finishing tension, and where the construction allows, choose a balanced structure such as interlock or rib.

When is spirality measured?

After laundering. The whole point of the test is that spirality is latent in the greige fabric and released by washing, so measuring before wash tells you very little.
